Through a partnership with Omni, Meatly, formerly known as “Good Dog Food,” has introduced a new can of pet food made using cultivated chicken as the protein source.
Meatly shares the goal of being the first company in the world to sell cultured meat for pets, and to be the first company to sell cultured meat-based products with regulatory approval in the UK and Europe. The aims.
The company is working with Omni, a new and growing protein pet food company in the UK, founded by veterinarian Dr Guy Sandelowski. Omni claims to have generated more than £2 million in sales of dog food made from legume, algae and yeast protein feeds.
This time, the two companies have joined forces to develop canned wet food for cats and enter the cultured meat market. Ingredients include Meatly's cruelty-free chicken.
According to Statista, the pet food market in 2024 is expected to generate revenue of USD 149.9 billion. In fact, it also reports that the market is expected to grow at 5.56 percent annually. With this in mind, Meatley said the industry's environmental impact is also “growing rapidly.”
Pet food market research: approaches and alternatives
In fact, Meatly claims that 22% of the meat currently consumed in the UK is consumed by pets, which equates to a “significant amount of GHG emissions”.
However, the company shared that it is tackling this issue by “producing sustainable, delicious, and nutritious meat while reducing reliance on industrial agriculture.”
Now, Meatly wants to bring its products to market “quickly and affordably,” and if the product receives regulatory approval.
“It's incredibly exciting to see the first-ever cans of cultivated pet food roll off the production line. This is a huge milestone for cultured meat globally and we are confident that our product will be ready for sale. ” said Owen Ensor, Co-Founder and CEO of Meatly.
“Pet food already accounts for 20% of the meat produced worldwide, and as demand continues to grow, so does the industry's environmental impact. We are excited to be working with an innovative company like Omni to make this a reality as quickly as possible.”
But what are retailers in the pet food sector saying? David Wainwright, commercial director at Pets at Home, says the company is “the first retailer to offer our products in our pet care centres. I'm looking forward to it.''
“Although it is still early days, we are committed to driving change in the industry and finding sustainable alternatives to some of the proteins used in pet food around the world is a huge challenge. It will be a step forward.”
