After a tough start to the new year, Vicksburg City Councilman Michael Mayfield, Ward 1, spoke out at Thursday's Vicksburg Mayor's and Aldermen's meeting for his support after being recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He expressed his gratitude to the people.
“To Mayor Flaggs, Councilman Monsour, and the city staff, I want to say thank you for all the love, care, and sharing you have shown me since I found out I had cancer for the second time. I am truly grateful,” Mayfield said. “Most people may not know, but this is my second fight. I've had cancer before. This fight is much more serious than the first.”
Mayfield said the fight has been made easier by the support already shown by the Vicksburg community.
“I have a task ahead of me,” he said. “With the help of all the citizens and the help of my family, my wife and children, my grandchildren, and my 11 sisters and brothers, and the residents of Vicksburg and Warren County, I cannot cope. There's a big challenge to be had. As long as I can with this job, I'm here. The cancer I have is causing me so much pain, but I'm here.
I'm glad to be here. ”
In mid-January, shortly after Mayfield's diagnosis, a large crowd gathered at Greater Grove Street Missionary Baptist Church to show their support. The parade of cars proceeded down Alcorn Drive, where Mayfield stood and waved from the roadside.
Thank you for showing me your love.
“I'm a very blessed person,” Mayfield said Thursday. “God has blessed me to be a part of this community. I have lived in Vicksburg all my life and plan to spend the rest of my life here in Vicksburg and Warren County, Mississippi.”
Mr. Mayfield has served on the 1st Ward City Council since he was first elected in July 2005. Prior to the election, he served as MP for his constituency for 10 years.
Served as District 2 Supervisor on the Warren County Board of Supervisors.
