Longtime UTEP faculty member John Hadjimarkow has been named the new dean of the university's Woody L. Hunt College of Business.
Hadjimarkou, who has been a marketing professor at the University of Texas at El Paso for 30 years, has been interim dean of the College of Business since August. That's when James Payne left his four-year position as dean to become dean of the Oklahoma State University School of Business in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Hadjimarkou was one of four finalists selected by a search committee comprised of 13 UTEP faculty and staff and three El Paso business leaders.
UTEP President John Wiebe, who appointed Hadjimarkou as interim dean, also selected him as permanent dean from a search committee's short list of candidates.
“Dr. Hadjimarkou has taught and mentored students, staff, and faculty with skill and care for many years,” Wiebe said in a statement. “He built a thriving culture in the (marketing) department and earned the trust and respect of his colleagues.” (He is past chair of the Department of Marketing, Management, and Supply Chain in the College of Business.)
He oversees a college with 100 faculty and staff and about 3,000 students, according to information on the College of Business' website.
In 2022, the university will be named after El Paso businessman Woody Hunt. This comes after his family foundation donated $25 million to the university to fund education and research efforts on trade and commerce between the United States and Mexico.
UTEP President Heather Wilson said, “A national search confirms that he is the right person to lead a university that is actively working to become a national leader in research and scholarship related to U.S.-Mexico trade.'' I'm not surprised that it has emerged as such.” It announced Hajimarkou's appointment in a statement on Monday.
Mr. Hadjimarkou has researched international marketing and strategy, including cross-border retail and global competitiveness.
