LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville organization is working to help underserved populations stay healthy. Bates Community Development Corporation and Norton Healthcare hosted the Healthy Hearts Fair in the Smoketown neighborhood last Sunday, February 18th.
Nachand Trabue is the director of Bates Community Development Corp., whose mission is to improve the quality of urban life.
“We're out there trying to help get resources back.” [have] We were kicked out of here years ago,” Trabue said.
Trabue is a fourth-generation Smoketown resident and said everything that happens there is very important to her.
“I feel great. I've been up since 6 o'clock this morning Sunday,” she said. “I feel good when I'm awake, [the fair doesn’t] It feels like work to me, [it’s] It's something I care about and am passionate about, and I want to see change happen in this community that I grew up in. ”
That's why Bates Community Development Corp. partnered with Norton Healthcare to offer a free Healthy Hearts Fair. It included information on blood pressure and blood sugar level tests, mammography and colon exams, and information on mental health.
“It is really important for us to be able to identify and support people in our community if they are at risk or have any health issues. Please seek medical attention as this is a sexually transmitted disease,” Trabue said.
The fair was held in Traboue's hometown, which she says is a place people sometimes overlook.
“To be able to reach out to communities that have been underserved and neglected for a variety of reasons and give them what they really need to live a comfortable life. It’s very important to us,” she said.
Bates Community Development said they hope to make this a quarterly event.
