LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Debbie Rice Bastiers and her husband are mourning the death of their rescued chihuahua/terrier mix, Willie.
Last Monday, Reese Bastians said she was taking her four dogs for a walk when two large pit bull mixes suddenly ran up to her, flipped her over and attacked Willie.
“When I got out of my neighbor's driveway apron and tried to cross the street, a pack of dogs came out and attacked my four dogs and me,” Reese Bastian recalled. “I tried to save the dog, but Willy was taken away from me.”
“From what I saw, she jumped to the ground and tried to hide them, and Willie slipped out from under her and got behind her,” said Debbie's husband, Lou Bastians. Told.
Reese Bastians said she rushed Willie and her other dog, Gidget, to the vet. Gidget was treated for a broken leg, but Willy's injuries were too severe to save.
“He was so sweet, and just a second before you see him in the video, he was wagging his tail and looking happy, and then he died,” Reese Bastiens said.
The owner of the pit bull mix, who doesn't like to talk on camera, said he accidentally left the gate open. He took full responsibility and said he was saddened that the dog was removed by animal control. However, local residents say this is not the first time such an incident has occurred.
Neighbor Bonnie Dugar said, “I've lived here for a little over 10 years, and he doesn't like dogs, including his previous dog, which would bark and keep walking.'' Told. “My neighbor lost his beautiful little dog and we had to try and make things right.”
Debbie and Lou said they were heartbroken by the loss of Willie, but remained hopeful that some action could be taken from the tragic incident.
“I risked my dog's life and the lives of my wife and the other dogs to finally go out and get them,” Lou Bastians said.
Long Beach Animal Services is investigating the incident and will hold a vicious dog hearing in the case.
