marsh trip
The Redwood Area Audubon Society will host free guided field trips at the Arcata Wetland Wildlife Refuge from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Bring your binoculars and meet trip leader Mark Colwell at the end of South I Street (Crop Lake) in Arcata to enjoy the easy trail.
As spring approaches, many resident birds may be singing, building nests, and showing signs of breeding activity. Shorebirds are likely to be abundant, so you'll have a chance to see goats, sandpipers, sandpipers, sandpipers, and great sandpipers on mudflats, pond islands, and muddy areas around wetlands.
Tour the swamp
Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor a free 90-minute tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Refuge on Saturday. Walks take place rain or shine.
Meet with leader Paul Johnson in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street at 2 p.m. After discussing how sewage treatment plants work, Johnson highlighted some of the lesser-known small critters that live along the trail (such as galls, caterpillars, and bugs) that many people tend to overlook on their walks.
