FAIRMONT – We're calling, the animals are barking and squawking – all for the beloved home of Fairmont! For more than 30 years, the Martin County Humane Society has been changing the lives of animals and their families, bringing new and special love to rescued pets and giving families new members to cherish. The shelter houses hundreds of pets and is looking for homes to care for all the animals that come through.
The Martin County Humane Society, also known as the Carl Netefee Memorial Animal Shelter, honors Netefee's monument and legacy. Netifi was a dedicated and caring animal control officer. His ideals are reflected in the animal shelter that is run in his honor and to fulfill the dreams he lived by.
The Martin County Humane Society offers a public walk-in for eager adopters and volunteers to meet and greet adoptable pets.
Currently, our longest resident pets include Galina and Thor. Galina is a female brown tabby cat. Although she is quite independent and curious, she is said to be a gentle pet. Thor is a male black Labrador Retriever mix. He is a loving, playful and cheerful dog. Galina and Thor have both been residents of the shelter for over a year. Both animals are friendly with children and look forward to being added to their families.
The Martin County Humane Society has had considerable success. The community volunteered generously and the animals were happily returned to their forever families. However, the shelter needs ongoing donations to keep hospitalized pets healthy and happy.
Items needed include dog and cat toys, dog soft treats, KMR kitten milk, Fancy Feast canned cat and kitten food, garbage bags, Ziploc bags, unscented dryer sheets, and used Includes blankets, towels, bedding, etc.
The Martin County Humane Society frequently hosts and participates in events throughout the year to raise awareness of pets in need of forever homes. The animal shelter will soon be holding a bake sale at Fleet & Farm in Fairmont on April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Fairmont community with ambitions to support the shelter's mission is encouraged to stay informed about his MCHS agenda through his Facebook page and website.
Additionally, to help mobilize Fairmont to adopt our furry friends, Hawkins Chevrolet generously sponsors two dogs from its shelter throughout the year. Dogs featured in this sponsorship are selected by the shelter. This sponsorship by Hawkins Chevrolet covers all adoption fees as long as the interested adopter qualifies. Two dogs attracted attention in March's sponsorship. Boo the husky and Bruce the chocolate Labrador. April's sponsored dogs are Maynard, an Australian Cattle Dog, and Luna, a young Pit Bull Terrier. Interested owners are encouraged to visit her MCHS and meet these animals.
Not only do adoptions and foster homes save lives and benefit shelters, but volunteering at MCHS is a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the pet. For some, volunteering has proven to be a therapeutic and soothing pastime. For others, it gives a sense of responsibility. Many animals arrive at shelters with little history of human interaction, but volunteering strengthens the trusting relationship between humans and animals.
“Volunteering helps get pets adopted.” An anonymous volunteer pointed out.
Karen Folkers is president of the Martin County Humane Society.
“It makes me so happy to know that I’m helping animals.” Fawkes said. “Whether you're cuddling an animal or cleaning its cage, you're doing a lot for your pet.”
Folkers encourages people of all ages to volunteer during business hours. She said no matter what skill you have, you can definitely develop it at the Martin County Humane Society.
“Several [volunteers] Some people may not be able to walk the dog or do extra work than others. There's something here for everyone, no matter your skill or ability. ”
Adoption costs vary and include appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter, tick prevention, and deworming.
