Abortion has become a top issue in the 2022 election after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to abortion. While abortion remains a top issue for many voters, the most important issue influencing voters in 2024 is the economy.
According to a new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll, 28% of likely voters say the economy is the most important issue, followed by immigration at 15% and health care at 12%.
“People are experiencing the effects of runaway inflation every day,” said Republican strategist Andy Brehm, who said he was not surprised that the economy ranked No. 1 among issues. “So prices are much higher than they were before the president.” [Joe] Mr. Biden was inaugurated. ”
Former DFL Party Chairman Brian Melendez agreed this is a big problem, but said the economy has improved in some ways over the past year, although challenges remain in controlling inflation. .
“Things are better than they were a year ago, but it's true that even though the numbers are good, people feel differently,” Melendez said. “Unemployment is in a good place. They feel like they're paying more when they go to the grocery store.”
Brehm says he's not surprised that immigration ranks as the second most important issue.
“If the United States was not sovereign, if we were at risk from what we're seeing at our southern border and from people coming into this country illegally, we wouldn't have a country,” Brehm said. he said. “So, for me, that's a big issue.”
Taxes (10%), abortion (7%) and gun control (7%) make up the top six issues cited by voters.
Melendez said she believes abortion will become a more important issue as Election Day approaches.
“If you have a government that wants to take away a woman's right to choose, to take away her fundamental decisions about how she lives her life, that's not a free government,” he says. “I think people will respond to that. Abortion will become a bigger issue in November.”
