DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Donation barrels will be placed throughout the community as Kettering Health hosts its first Period of Poverty Giving Drive.
From March 11th to March 31st, Kettering Health will collect menstrual products for those in need. Community members can drop off pads, tampons and liners into donation barrels throughout the Dayton area.
This initiative is a collaboration between Kettering Health's women's healthcare team and the Femme Aid Collaborative. Following this activity, Femme Aid Collaborative will distribute the donations to local women's shelters and other areas of need in the community.
The products collected will be sent to Greater Dayton residents facing period poverty who are unable to access menstrual products due to financial barriers. Menstrual products are not eligible for purchase by financial assistance programs such as SNAP or WIC.
“Two in five women in the United States suffer from period poverty,” said Lisa Geroff, administrative director of obstetrics and gynecology services at Kettering Health Medical Group. “In Ohio alone, nearly 33% of women under the age of 25 face period poverty. While this initiative may not completely eradicate the problem, it will make a difference in the lives of many. It’s definitely going to make a difference.”
