As Indiana University gears up, little 500 In the lead-up to the April 19th and 20th races, local authorities are offering tips to keep the community safe during the “World's Greatest University Weekend.”
The women's race will be held at Bill Armstrong Stadium on April 19 at 4 p.m. and the men's race on April 20 at 2 p.m.
“We have more visitors to campus, more activity, so we have more vehicles on campus and more pedestrians on campus,” said IU Police Department Public Information Officer Hannah Skiba. Stated. “We will also be bringing in additional police officers to help meet that need.”
IUPD has noticed different types of calls depending on the weather on Little 500 weekends and regular weekends, she said.
“Many of our calls are medical-related,” Skiba said. “Are you not drinking enough water because you're outside during a long race, or are you just not hydrated enough over the weekend?”
Regarding safety recommendations, Skiba said always have someone with you, charge your cell phone, drink in moderation, and report suspicious activity.
“There are a lot of extra people around campus, so if you witness any suspicious or dangerous activity, we ask that you be a good neighbor,” she said.

The faculty will decide Tuesday whether to hold a vote of no confidence against Witten and other administrators.
Carmen Pike, IU Health Department Bloomington Emergency Services clinical practice manager, said the Bloomington hospital saw a 15 to 20 percent increase in patients over the weekend.
She said typical injuries include abrasions, fractures, dislocations and lacerations. Alcohol-related emergencies are also common.
“We're hiring more nurses, health care providers, support staff, and we're getting more supplies,” Pike said. “We are always prepared for whatever happens.”
Pike said the hospital orders supplies and sets staff schedules six weeks in advance.
He also advised people to stay hydrated, avoid binge drinking or consuming unknown alcoholic beverages, and to have a designated driver. She also recommended having a safety plan and remembering your phone number.
“We want everyone to stay safe and have a good time,” she said.
