There was also a rumor that Taylor Swift wrote it.
Argyle came out over the weekend and no one noticed. Despite a star-studded cast, the film has barely made a splash. The main reason for this was that the film was subjected to a series of appalling reviews. I watched it and I can tell you that Argyle is not a good movie. I've always been a fan of Matthew Vaughn's films, but Argyle is not one of them. But what's sparked the most controversy, and perhaps the only interesting thing about this debacle, is the bizarre marketing campaign surrounding a book that may or may not have been written by Taylor Swift. Okay, so it's not based on Taylor Swift, but here's a completely confusing marketing stunt that explains whether or not Argyle is based on a book.
Spoilers ahead for Argyle.
So, is “Argyle” based on a book?
That's right, to answer this we need to know a little about the plot. Argyle is a detective invented by Ellie Conway, the author of the film, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. The entire plot centers around her accidentally writing a plot for a real-life crime syndicate that seems to get too close to something. However, if you search for her Argylle book by Elly Conway, you can actually buy it. So which came first, the movie or the book? Is Ellie Conway real?
Basically, Matthew Vaughn and his friends wanted to convince everyone that that was the case. When Argyle was announced, it was planned to be based on a book by a writer named Ellie Conway. The Hollywood Reporter then disputed this in 2022, bringing up the fact that no one called Ellie Conway could be contacted or found, and no publisher or publicist could be found. It was then revealed in the trailer that she was the main character, but of course Swifty fans thought for a while that it was written by Taylor Swift under a pseudonym due to the fact that Ellie Conway loves cats. I decided to insist on it for a while. I am desperately clinging to my last straw.
Matthew Vaughn then appeared and asserted that Taylor Swift had nothing to do with the book or movie, but Bryce Dallas Howard said that Swift was an “unwitting inspiration” for Ellie Conway. ” he said. Understood.
In a no-climactic resolution, earlier this year authors Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen revealed that they had just written a tie-in novel and published it in January 2024 as a promotion. And that's what it really is.
