Press Release — Minister for Further Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, has launched Quantum 2030, Ireland’s first national strategy for quantum technologies.
Quantum computing is a field of computer science that uses the principles of quantum theory to describe the behavior of energy and matter at the atomic and subatomic level.
Quantum 2030 focuses the efforts of the Irish quantum technology community on new growth areas in quantum technology where Ireland can achieve a competitive advantage.
Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “The publication of Quantum 2023 shows that its vision has been adopted as a whole-of-government policy objective. It shows us the path to becoming a hub.”
Quantum computing application development activity in Ireland has grown rapidly over the past three years, both in academia and in corporate organizations.
There has been a significant increase in the development of critical quantum computing applications for enterprise end users, public sector organizations, and researchers.
As a result, organizations from a variety of sectors in Ireland are investing in or exploring the co-development of quantum computing solutions for research or business services and solutions.
Irish researchers also recognize the innovative and competitive potential of quantum technology. Quantum computing has a long research tradition in Ireland, evidenced by impressive research results and an international reputation. This activity ranges from the development of key enabling technologies for quantum computer engineering, to the actual realization of quantum computer hardware and software, and the transition to applications.
Minister Harris added: “Ireland occupies a strategic position in the technology sector as a competitive global hub. We are grateful. Together, these programs will prepare Ireland for the quantum revolution and provide a skilled workforce that can apply breakthroughs in quantum computing to smart medical technology, telecommunications, climate change and more. We are committed to building on Ireland's previous successes in information and communications technology to become a world leader in research, development and innovation to support the quantum revolution, and to realize and exploit new opportunities in quantum technology, particularly in quantum. We believe we can become a hub for computing and communications.”
