Throughout human history, the concept of generations has always been important in shaping cultural norms and social trends. Each generation contributes unique characteristics, beliefs, and life experiences that shape everything from political ideology to consumer behavior. You've probably heard of Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z, Generation Alpha, etc., but another term is becoming increasingly popular: Peak Millennials. But who are they?
According to the New York Times, people born in 1990 and 1991 form the peak of America's population and are known as the peak millennial generation. The term is used for people who are currently 33 or soon to be 34 and have been described as having “walked through the financial world like someone narrowing down a sweater that is too small.” (Also read: From Renting to Owning: The Millennial Revolution in Homeownership)
This generation accounts for approximately 13% of the chunk. They succeeded in influencing the economy in various ways. For example, it affected the economy, vacation and dining habits, and re-urbanization, the New York Times reported.
Who are the other generations?
According to Pew Research, there is no official organization or committee that determines the names and boundaries of each generation. Rather, various names and birth year truncations are proposed and, over time, a consensus is established informally through the media and everyday language. According to parents.com, generations are defined as:
The greatest generation (GI generation)
Born between 1901 and 1927, this generation lived through the Great Depression and then served in World War II.
2. Silent generation
These people were born in 1928 and lasted until 1945. The Silent Generation had a reputation for being very accommodating, so they remained silent throughout the McCarthy era, when fear of communism gripped the nation.
3. Baby boomers:
The term “boomer” originates from the post-World War II economic boom that occurred between 1946 and 1964.
4. Generation X
Generation X has experienced rapid environmental changes leading to the AIDS epidemic, the rise of MTV culture, and recognition of LGBTQ+ rights. People born between 1965 and 1980 belong to this generation.
5. Millennials
Anyone born between 1981 and 1996 is considered a Millennial. They are also called Generation Y.
6. Generation Z
This generation, also known as iGen, was born between 1997 and 2010. They are constantly connected to each other through their phones, screens, and tablets.
7. Alpha generation:
Children born between 2010 and 2024 belong to the Alpha generation group. This particular group is the first generation to have never experienced a world without social media, and they have a deeper knowledge of technology than previous generations.
