LUCKNOW: In Lucknow, a significant number of couples (one in six) may face difficulty conceiving. In about half of these cases, male infertility is the main factor. Lifestyle choices have a huge impact on semen quality. This was the key theme at UACON 2024, the annual conference of the Uttar Pradesh Association of Urologists, held at King George Medical University (KGMU). Dr. Salil Tandon highlighted the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption and smoking on sperm quality. “Alcohol disrupts the hormonal balance essential for sperm production, while tobacco introduces harmful chemicals that damage sperm cells and their DNA,” he said. Dr. Harvinder Singh Paffa, faculty member of KGMU's Department of Urology and president of the Urological Society, mentioned a study. By Indian Council of Medical Research. The study revealed that about 15% of couples in India suffer from infertility, and half of these cases are due to male infertility. “Stress can significantly disrupt the hormonal balance required for sperm production, thereby affecting male fertility,” Dr. Pahwa added. Furthermore, Dr Sameer Trivedi of BHU highlighted that obesity is another factor. Excess body fat disrupts hormone levels, reduces testosterone, and inhibits sperm production. Additionally, obesity-related conditions such as insulin resistance and inflammation further disrupt hormone levels and sperm function. Dr Trivedi advised couples facing infertility issues not to delay seeking medical help. “Treatment for male infertility is easily available,” he says. “A simple blood test can identify stress and other issues so you can deal with them effectively.” Dr. Salil says lifestyle changes can improve semen health within six to nine months. he added.
