Jacksonville, Florida – When we talk about cold weather preparedness, we hear the Bureau of Meteorology team talk about protecting P such as people, pipes, plants, and pets.
Epic Outreach, an organization that uses animals to help people, shared the following tips on how to better protect your pets.
In cold winter weather, bring your animal indoors.
If you can't go indoors, provide an insulated area outdoors. Hay or straw can keep you warm. You can increase the amount of materials to keep the animal warm, and regularly check and replace damp bedding to maintain hygiene.
Animals need extra calories to maintain body temperature in cold temperatures, so make sure they have enough to eat. They must be fed a balanced and nutritious diet.
Check your water bowl to make sure the water isn't frozen. Make sure to change the water regularly or use a heated bowl to keep your water supply from freezing.
We also check on the animals regularly to make sure they are healthy and comfortable. Watch for signs of pain or discomfort.
EPIC Outreach has been running since 2015, giving children and adults the opportunity to bridge the human-animal connection, create positive change, and foster compassionate ways of living. For more information about EPIC Outreach, please visit our website here.
