Dear Annie: During this terrifying cold snap we're experiencing, we encourage our animal-loving readers to step up and help animals in need. For example, a person caring for feral cats will set up a shelter for the cat until the weather improves. Now they need you the most. An old igloo cooler with holes for straw (not hay or blankets) works well. Place it under an evergreen tree or in a secluded area.
I added a kitten door to the shed. Inside is a few boxes I threw together (home improvement stores cut the wood for free; all you need are measurements and nails or screws). We took some very heavy boxes and filled them with straw, being careful not to get them wet.
When it comes to birds, right now they are most dependent on us. They need high-quality food and water that contains protein, so it's a good idea to keep a water dish open and available for drinking.
Moreover, this will also benefit your own health. Because all these efforts are good for your soul and a healthy way to keep moving when it's -10 degrees like where I live. Oh, I need to run — my suet feeder is running low! — Hungry Pet
Dear Hungry Pets: I love this letter, which encourages us to care for those who can't take care of themselves. Children and animals need our help and protection. Thank you for your letter.
