LUBBOCK, Texas — From Josh Jung to Zach Thomas, Texas Tech University has a number of notable alumni. Former Texas Tech quarterback and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes is no exception, according to University President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec.
“As we say, he's an example that it can be done from here,” Shobanec said.
Shobanek said the Red Raiders can watch Mahomes' success from the sideline, but many of them are also experiencing the thrill and excitement of it.
“The Red Raiders…we all feel there's something special about this place and in a way he represents us, so we're very proud of his success. ” Shobanec said.
Shobanek said the university is not only proud of its connection to Mahomes, but also has been a great help with public relations and finances. Schovanek talked about a Texas Tech ad that highlights how its association with the decorated quarterback has generated millions of impressions across the country.
“We were also able to see how many of those impressions converted into clicks on the application site. Thousands of people,” he said.
While Mahomes certainly has a big impact on Texas Tech's culture, Schovanek said he sees it a little differently.
“[Our students are] They are ambitious and successful, but they also have an endearing humility, and we often use the word grit,” he said.[Mahomes] He embodies all the values that are part of our culture, so I would like to say that he reflects the culture that we have here and conveys it on a very big stage. . ”
Schovanec said he believes Mahomes reflects that on and off the field.
“Even if Patrick wasn't as successful as he was, he's just a great example of what the Red Raiders are all about,” Schovanec explained. “He does things the right way and is a good person. But when you combine that with his success, it's a huge asset to this university.”
According to Texas Tech University, Patrick Mahomes is the first Red Raider in school history to win three Super Bowls.
