For some of us, maintaining good health isn't always easy. But a partnership between groups on both coasts is making a difference.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — For some of us, maintaining good health isn't always easy. One partnership between Healthy Heart Nation and The Plantrician Project hopes to change that by working with the Health Equity and Lifestyle Project Conference to educate, equip, and empower communities.
The HELP conference aims to inform the community about some of the health challenges that exist related to health outcomes in the areas of maternal and infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and mental health. I am.
Healthy Heart Nation is a nonprofit organization based in California. Dr. Columbus Batiste, an interventional cardiologist with the group, said the conference was aimed at providing an update on the current state of health disparities both locally and in the United States. It's one of the causes, and it's a disproportionate burden within the African American community, so what better time than now to do this work called service while we're here in Huntsville? We decided there wasn't a place for it, so meetings would be held there, including blood pressure tests and nutritional education.”
UAH student Daniel Ford received a scholarship to attend the conference. It's a partnership between Healthy Heart Nation and the Plantrician Project. The Plantrician project is based in Tennessee. “I'm currently a DNP student at UAH and I'm doing a lot of research on cancer in the African American community, cancer prevention screening, so I've been doing a self-assessment of the community that I want to serve. What can Daniel do to get healthy so he has the strength and patience to help?”
One session in particular featured representatives from local institutions including Alabama A&M University, Drake State University, Calhoun Community College, UAH, and Oakwood University. Leaders explained that all these schools play a role in promoting the health of their communities.
“So Calhoun is here today to really share what we're trying to do to not only improve students' paths to employment, but to improve their overall lifestyle. It could be diet or exercise.”
“We are an HBCU. We have to do what we have to do to ensure the health of our students. But we also provide our community with access to medical care and health knowledge. ”
Additionally, the HELP conference stated that it is a top priority. “Instead of just starting a conference to talk about problems, we really focused on actionable solutions so that when people leave the conference, they can go home and start making changes today. Sho.”
