The Virginia Department of Education will restart health science programs this summer. The Summer Residential Governor's School for Medicine and Health Sciences will be held from June 23rd to July 20th at Radford University's Roanoke Campus.
The program was last held in summer 2019, before the pandemic.
This highly selective program is open to current second and third year students in public or private schools, as well as home-schooled students. Home-educated students must apply through their district's public schools. In this program, students experience campus life and deepen their understanding of the medical field while participating in hands-on activities that include real-world scenarios.
The program is designed to be free to students, with costs typically split 50-50 between VDOE and local school departments. VDOE says the Summer Residential Governor's School provides an intensive educational experience for “high-achieving” students. In addition to medicine and health science programs, fields such as engineering, visual and performing arts, humanities, and agriculture have also reopened.
The VDOE application deadline for medicine and health sciences programs is February 23, but application deadlines for regional departments are earlier. Students can contact their local school counselor for more information or visit VDOE's website to apply.
