Halifax Health hosted a breakfast to honor organ recipients on Friday, April 5, followed by a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate Donate Life Month. The event brought together recipients, donor families, community members and supporters to celebrate the gift of life and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.
The day began with the first Donate Life breakfast reception honoring organ recipients and their families. Heartfelt conversations filled the room as attendees shared personal stories of hope, resilience, and gratitude. The breakfast was an opportunity for recipients to connect with each other and express their gratitude for the life-saving gift.
After breakfast, attendees gathered outside for the annual flag-raising ceremony. Against a backdrop of blue skies and a gentle breeze, the Donate Life flag was raised to honor the sacrifices of organ donors and to mark the second lease of life given to them. Speakers shared moving words of encouragement and gratitude, emphasizing the profound impact of organ donation on individuals, families and communities.
“Today, we come together to celebrate the amazing people who have received the gift of life through organ donation,” said Shannon Starlin, manager of the Halifax Health Transplant Services Centre. “Their stories are a powerful reminder of the life-saving potential of organ donation and the extraordinary generosity of donors and their families.”
More than 3,000 organ transplants were performed in 2021, and more than 90,000 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant.
