NORWOOD, Mass. — Congressman Stephen Lynch will tour two locations at Steward Hospital on Wednesday. This comes after Gov. Maura Healey called on Steward Healthcare to hand over the hospital to a new owner if it does not provide financial transparency and adequate patient care.
Lynch, along with local union members and Steward Healthcare leaders, will tour Norwood Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton. Norwood Hospital was closed after a flood nearly four years ago and is still under construction.
Steward announced just a few months ago that the company was facing difficult financial conditions. As a stopgap measure, Stewards announced the closure of some facilities, but then announced in early February that it had found a bridging loan to keep its doors open. However, stewards have not announced how long this will last.
“If appropriate staffing and supply levels are not met, in consultation with hospital leadership, we may take actions necessary to protect patients, including freezing admissions, closing beds, canceling procedures, or transferring patients to other hospitals.” We will take all necessary steps to ensure that the .
When Governor Healey was attorney general, she served as head of the Center for Health Information and Analysis, which required stewards to provide financial information. While the case is still under appeal, Governor Healey wrote a just three-page letter urging stewards to transition the Massachusetts facility as soon as possible.
A Steward spokesperson responded that the health system is working closely with state officials to provide financial records and explore ways to provide care to patients.
