January was not kind to Google's staff. The tech giant laid off 6% of its workforce, or 12,000 people, last year, and says the layoffs are far from over this year. But it's not all about performance, as the tech giant just hired a top technologist from its investment banking division.
Corey Boyle, MD and technical fellow at Goldman Sachs, is joining Google as a senior staff software engineer. Boyle has been MD for two years, but he earned the coveted Technology Fellow title three years ago as Vice President.

This is not the first time Boyle has left Goldman Sachs for FAANG. He joined the bank as a fresh graduate and after working for nine years, he joined Amazon as a software engineer. More than two years later, he returned to the bank.
Most of the job cuts will reportedly be in non-technical areas such as sales. However, some technical staff are at risk. There have already been reports of layoffs of engineers in areas such as augmented reality and Google's voice assistant, but Blind engineers say there have also been layoffs in Google's cloud division.
