The world's largest bird is returning to the land of the gods, where it was once a popular winged bird. The ostrich and emu, the world's largest and second largest bird species, respectively, are currently gaining traction in the burgeoning pet market across Kerala, with ambitious entrepreneurs seeking to capitalize on the commerce of these attractive markets. They are entering the market to take advantage of this potential.
The demand for these birds is so high that they have become an essential breed in thriving private pet zones in the state, with Malappuram in the northern Malabar region accounting for the majority of these farms. Currently, many such farms are popping up across the state, and it is being pointed out as a new trend.
Ostrich and emu farming has become a profitable business for entrepreneurs who are active in pet farming.
Raise a winged wonder
Regarded as the world's largest bird, the ostrich is estimated to grow up to 9 feet tall, with its neck accounting for nearly half of that height. Pet market entrepreneurs have discovered that ostriches, which are native to Africa, can be easily bred in Kerala. Ostrich farming requires a fenced environment at least 4 to 5 feet high. These birds should be provided with plenty of space to run around.
There should be space to run. The male ostrich bird has a large head and is black in color, with white feathers on the wings and tail. Female ostriches can be recognized by their brown skin. Therefore, sexing birds can be easily done from a very young age.
The ostrich's diet requires about 5 kilograms of concentrate, two chicken eggs and a small amount of chopped green grass. You should also give them plenty of clean water. Ostriches reach maturity at two and a half years of age.
How to raise an emu
Emu birds are housed at a ratio of 1:2 or 2 males to 1 female emu. These birds reach maturity at the age of two and can be kept in large groups or in pairs. During the breeding season for emus, from December to January, males should be removed from the group.
Emu eggs are green in color and weigh on average 900 grams. Emu birds lay eggs approximately every six days. If a male emu starts hatching, you will need to remove it from the group and add another male emu to the group. Male emus are also responsible for hatching.
A female emu lays an average of 12 eggs during the breeding season. This number may vary depending on the feed provided to your emu and its age. On average, an emu egg takes 58 to 62 days to hatch.
A pair of emus requires about 3 kg of concentrate, at least 10 liters of water, and vegetables such as carrots and cabbage. Necessary vitamins and minerals should also be added to the diet.
Enjoy a family-friendly vacation – Casavi Paradise
Located near Vaniyambalam Temple in Malappuram, Kasavi Paradise is a pet market where families and children can have a fun day out. Casavi Paradise has a variety of attractions including ostriches, emus, horses, turkeys, ducks, pigeons, cats, iguanas, hedgehogs and a wide variety of parrots. Kasavi Paradise is still under development, with founders Salman and Shanabas expecting it to be fully operational by March. A variety of fruit trees are also an attraction of this pet farm house.
Salman initially conceived and built the farmhouse as a place for his family to relax and spend quality time. But after people started coming in droves to enjoy the winged wonders and other attractions, it was converted into a commercial venture.
