After defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, Gary Neville criticized Chelsea, claiming that the “blue £1 billion bottle job” should have been “aimed at the throat” in extra time.
It was an interesting match with many chances for both sides. The goal was scored by Virgil van Dijk's header just before the end of extra time. But Neville believes Chelsea's inability to get the job done in 90 minutes will hurt his players.
Sky Sports pundit described the Blues as a “blue billion pound bottle job”, adding: “Chelsea players will always regret that extra time.
“I thought for the first 90 minutes they played very well and were punching hard, but in extra time, the real crux of the game, Liverpool were neck-and-neck with young kids and they were playing hard. I couldn't come up with an answer during the last 10 minutes of normal time…
“They didn't come, they didn't perform. You can't do that. You can't do that. What were they all about? Credit to Liverpool, but I was really disappointed with Chelsea in that extra time.
“You can lose any final, you can lose any football match, but you can't play like that. Especially when you have five kids on the pitch at Liverpool, you can't be cowering or There’s no going back. You have to attack the throat.”
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Redknapp wondered this as he watched the departing Klopp celebrate with his team. How do you follow manager Jurgen Klopp? After what he has achieved and what he has produced, who would want to come to Liverpool?
“That's virtually impossible. That's right. This man is truly a leader of men. He led a city and every Liverpool fan around the world looked up to the man and what he accomplished, and at that time in the doldrums. He turned around a club that had been in the middle of a long run and made everyone believe in what he was trying to achieve.
“And the young players that he's given a chance to, he has that belief in all of them and he's just a great human being.”
