san antonio – The owner of Angelique Monuments, a San Antonio funeral tombstone company, is currently in police custody.
San Antonio police announced that an arrest warrant was executed Saturday for Angelique Monument owner Elena Moreno.
In previous reporting on KSAT, Mr. Moreno was accused of failing to provide a headstone that the customer claimed had paid for in full.
“There were articles in the media about this, and those articles named multiple victims,” SAPD Public Information Officer Ricardo Guzman said.
Two KSAT stories aired over the last month showing that a total of 12 families appear to have paid Mr. Moreno for headstones they never received.
Guzman said after the KSAT story aired, multiple families made similar reports to police about their orders from Angelique Monument.
But Saturday's arrest focused on just one of those reports.
San Antonio police said the warrant that led to Moreno's arrest involved a family that paid Angelique Monument more than $8,500 for a headstone.
Moreno was formally charged with theft between $2,500 and $30,000, which is considered a state prison felony.
“It's frustrating for these families. Not being able to receive that closure from those headstones is frustrating and heartbreaking. But we want to bring justice to those families. ,” Guzman said.
As Moreno was placed in a San Antonio police vehicle, reporters asked her if she had stolen money from these families.
“We didn't do that,” Moreno said.
SAPD said property crimes detectives are actively investigating the other reports, which will run concurrently with the charges filed Saturday.
They are asking anyone who believes they were a victim to contact SAPD property crimes detectives at the emergency number (210) 207-7273.
KSAT will continue to update the public regarding any further fees or changes in this regard.
