Frederick County, Maryland (DC News Now) — Frederick County Animal Shelter is facing the harsh reality of pet owners surrendering their pets.
Director David Luckenbaugh said the increase in pet surrenders began in December 2023. Since then, the numbers have increased to alarming levels.
“I think we received eight adult dogs and five puppies,” Luckenbaugh said.
“In January, we increased to 12 dogs. In February, we have welcomed two dogs so far, and we already have seven dogs scheduled for the rest of this month, with another eight in March. “We're expecting a dog whose head owner has surrendered,” he continued.
Luckenbaugh said housing is the biggest reason for vacating.
“Either they're moving or there's a problem with their rental agreement,” Luckenbaugh explained. “Pet deposits and their landlords don't allow animals, so that's probably the biggest reason.”
Currently, the shelter has approximately 40 dogs. Luckenbaugh said changes have been made to accommodate them all.
“There's always a way to find a little bit of extra space,” Luckenbaugh said. “He has 48 single dog runs at home, but by opening them up he will have 24 dog runs and six more in the quarantine area so he can accommodate more dogs. We are making it possible to operate the housing units in a similar manner.”
Luckenbaugh said he is confident the shelter will be able to accommodate surrendered pets, but he encourages families to be aware of their responsibility when adopting a pet.
