Two house fires broke out in South Hall County on Sunday, injuring a total of four people and killing three pets.
Hall County Fire Rescue Captain Tim Drake said the first fire started at a home on Melinda Lane off Pine Vale Road in the Chestnut Mountain area.He said crews were called to the scene around 11:30 a.m.
“When units arrived on scene, they found a medium-sized home with heavy smoke,” Drake said. “When they arrived, two people were actually outside trying to get the third person out the window.”
Drake said six small dogs were able to escape the fire, but fire officials said earlier in the day that three pets ultimately died at the scene. The three people who escaped the fire suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.
Later that same day, crews were called to another house fire in Oakwood on Stevens Road. Drake said the building is a small wooden structure and when crews arrived there was smoke coming from near the front door.
“When crews arrived, there were several people trying to remove the dog from the building,” Drake said. “We removed about nine dogs. There were no casualties, but there were several dogs with burns.”
Drake said all residents of the home were able to escape, but one person suffered minor injuries.
Both fires have been extinguished and the causes are under investigation, but Sunday's windy conditions made fighting the fires more difficult, Drake said.
“As far as the cause of the fire outbreak, they are unrelated,” Drake said. “Wind had a lot to do with the progression of the (Melinda Lane) fire because the fire was much more advanced than the Oakwood house.”
No firefighters were injured in either incident.
