KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Former Ulster County Treasurer Burton Galnick Jr. has been sentenced to two years in prison for two counts of grand larceny, according to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office (UCDA). Mr. Galnik pled guilty on October 10, 2023.
Galnick was arrested in June 2023 and charged with stealing more than $97,000 from Hurley Recreational Association, a nonprofit organization that provides summer programs for children. Investigators determined the suspect also stole thousands of dollars from former Ulster County Executive Michael Hine's campaign bank account.
Police said Galnik was previously the financial director of both organizations. According to UCDA, Galnick stole from two victims over an extended period of time for personal use and manipulated financial records to conceal the crimes.
Galnick was forced to pay $35,000 in restitution to the Hurley Recreation Association and $15,000 to the Hayne Campaign before sentencing. He was also required to waive his right to appeal and sign a confession of judgment against two insurance companies that paid Hurley Recreation Association about $62,000 after the theft was discovered.
