If you're someone looking to make fitness a lifestyle this year, or just need some inspiration to get back on the fitness path, a little advice from the right sources could be all you need to reach new levels of success. not.
Variety spoke to the SoMe Health and Fitness Award nominees ahead of the big night on February 3, when the island's other top social media content creators will be celebrated.
Health & Fitness candidates offer advice to help you stay firmly on the fitness track.
start small
According to Instagram runners Aaron Paul Pamintuan (aka @aaruns) and Edward Dela Cruz (aka @storm501st), it's important to start small and be consistent.
“It starts with the smallest thing,” Delacruz said. “Most people say they don't have time. I recommend making it a daily routine and starting small, like 5 to 10 minutes. Eventually your body and mindset will get used to it, and you'll have more time. You can start increasing it to 10 to 15 minutes. You can't just jump in there.”
Pamintuan said something similar.
“I started running in 2022. I was running frequently at the beginning of the year, but it wasn't until May 4th that I started running every day,” he said. “Start small, build a routine, and only do what you can. Don't overdo it too quickly and forgive yourself if you get off track.”
Dela Cruz and Pamintuan are known on social media for running 365 days a year, no matter the weather, so they “walk the walk” when it comes to fitness advice.
Delacruz is an avid runner, but he said he doesn't need to be.
“The most important thing is that people need to find activities that they enjoy. If they like the sea, go swimming. If they like dancing, sign up for Zumba. Or go to the island You can also walk or hike around the island. There are lots of things people can do on this island to stay active.”
For those who want to become a year-round runner, Pamintuan said the appeal of the challenge is the “sense of accomplishment” after every run.
“I always feel good about myself every time I run, regardless of how I felt before I ran,” he said.
keep it simple
Jerry Diaz, also known as “bbj_athletics” on Instagram, is a fan of “keeping it simple.”
“Let’s start with the basics,” he said. “For example, walk a path, ride a bike, incorporate bodyweight training, swim at a beautiful beach, hike different trails, make it an activity with family and friends, or join a group class. etc. Do what works for you.”
Diaz has an extensive list of certifications, including recognition from the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He is a personal trainer, a gold medal winning karate practitioner, and a former member of the CNMI National Basketball Team. He also owns his BBJ Athletics fitness studio.
Diaz has a message for everyone who is adopting fitness as a lifestyle this year.
“It takes courage and motivation to consider making fitness a lifestyle. Start now and keep going, no matter where you train: at home, in the parking lot, at your favorite gym, with your favorite trainer or class instructor. Train with purpose and enjoy the process. Trust the process.”
move and groove
For those looking to get moving and adopt a fitness lifestyle, check out Ryne Russell's Zumba classes at Gold's Gym on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m.
Russell, who goes by @ohitsrhine on Instagram, said the best way to start Zumba is to just get up and do it.
“Put on your gym clothes and go to your local gym or open area to exercise,” she said. “We all have tasks and obligations to accomplish, but all we need is an hour or 30 minutes each day to replenish and increase our energy.”
Among the people who attend her Zumba classes is a 74-year-old woman.
She said the advantage of Zumba is that it takes very little time to get started. Once in class, all participants need to do is wear comfortable clothes, have enough space to move around in class, and bring water.
