CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WOWK) – A Poka family says a cousin is responsible for the deaths of four of the family's pets and another cousin, Michael Ollis, 53.
An initial investigation was launched by West Virginia State Police after two cats were found dead in a suspected burglary in Poca, but after officers conducted a welfare check, Oris was found dead in Cross Lanes. The investigation expanded into his death.
Investigators say the suspect, Billy Cadle, hijacked the Oris car. Officers said they took him into custody and recovered two loaded shotguns.
Joshua Cadle said he and his family were heading to Lexington for a family vacation when they received a ringtone saying someone was at the door. They realized it was their cousin, Billy Cadle. They said they witnessed him kicking the door in.
By the time they returned home, the cats were found dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
Joshua's wife, speaking anonymously to 13 News, said the situation could have been much worse if the family had stayed home with the cats.
“They were our babies. But I'm glad they weren't home. We could have suffered the same fate as them,” she said. “We don't feel safe at home anymore.”
Cadle is being held without bail at South Central Regional Jail. West Virginia State Police said they anticipate additional charges against her.
