The financial services industry is no stranger to hopeless relationships, including employees on technology teams. Of more than 1,000 respondents to the 2024 Lifestyle Survey, 96% of them said they were in a stable romantic relationship. This is done despite sometimes difficult working conditions.
A vice president of technology at a large New York-based investment bank, who sleeps less than he would like, exercises less than he would like, and has a stressful work environment, gives his lifestyle outlook a 10/10 rating. He said he is doing so. why? A strong loving relationship with an understanding partner. Another man recently affected by redundancy said he had a “new home in a great neighborhood” and had a “great family life.”

Partners' expectations tend to be different. One UK-based engineer said his relationship was strained and advised him to “find a partner who will stay at home and take care of things around the house.” Another man who works at Goldman Sachs said he and his partner have a stable relationship even though they both work the same job and are in the office five days a week.
As for quants, the workload can be too much for people with good family lives. “I work too much and have too little time for my interests and my family,” said one New York-based quantitative vice president, who said that this strained his relationships. In addition to this, you need just 5 hours of sleep each day.
