NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst has launched a healthy living program aimed at promoting the mental and physical well-being of its residents.
The initiative, launched on February 22, is called the Healthy Lifestyle Program and highlights the importance of clean eating, physical activity and mindfulness.
The initiative, led by Dr. Larissa Polanco, features a variety of activities specifically aimed at encouraging healthy habits in children ages 8 to 17. The program includes food demonstrations that emphasize the importance of a nutritious diet. Exercise sessions to keep participants active. and mindfulness exercises to relieve stress.
Dr. Polanco noted that the program's origins began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when there was a worrying trend of people becoming less active. “During the pandemic, we noticed weight gain and lethargic behavior in our patients. This was a way to keep them active,” Dr. Polanco explained.
Designated as a high food insecurity area, Elmhurst faces unique challenges when it comes to accessing nutritious food. Dr. Polanco emphasized this point, saying, “People wonder, 'I'm doing everything right and I'm gaining weight.'” That's because you'll be consuming foods high in cholesterol and fat. ”
Health First President Carmen Brites emphasized the commitment of both the organization and Elmhurst Hospital to promoting the health of communities and children. “We and Elmhurst Hospital are committed to the health of our community and children,” Blitz asserted.
As the program progressed, Dr. Polanco expressed satisfaction with the positive changes observed among the participants. “I love seeing children's confidence and self-esteem grow,” she said, emphasizing the far-reaching impact of this work beyond physical health.
The hospital's healthy lifestyle program represents a proactive approach to addressing the multifaceted health challenges facing the community, especially in the wake of the pandemic. This initiative focuses on holistic well-being and aims to help families and children develop healthy habits that are sustainable over the long term.
