Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Germany – To better accommodate soldiers in the Hohenfels area, several medical services from the U.S. Army Health Clinic Vilseck are providing outreach services to Hohenfels.
Soldiers at the Multinational Joint Readiness Center now have access to chiropractic care, nutritional consulting, occupational therapy and more within an hour-long drive each way to Rhodes Barracks.
Chiropractic care is available on the first and third Friday of each month at the U.S. Army Health Clinic in Hohenfels. The Armed Forces Wellness Center and Occupational Therapy are available on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. The physical therapy clinic, located in the annex behind the main clinic, provides regular medical treatment 10 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, and home visits are available from the first Friday to the fourth Friday of the month.
“It's working for patients,” said Lt. Col. Casey McKenna, commander of the Hohenfels Army Health Clinic. “All of our patients who need it, especially those who need occupational therapy, would otherwise have to drive to Vilseck to receive those services. “We're providing a more efficient and convenient treatment for them here. It can keep them off the road and get them back on duty.”
Maj. Danny Harris, Deputy Commander of Clinical Services at Medical Activity Bavaria, said Friday visits by healthcare providers are always busy, and in addition, the service is very busy, especially when it comes to on-site availability. He said he has received positive comments through customer reviews.
“We have really great providers who are willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish our mission,” Harris added.
Dr. Jon Lopez, chiropractic physician at MEDDAC-Bavaria's U.S. Army Health Clinic Vilseck, has been in the field of chiropractic for 12 years, including 7.5 years in the Army.
“I think it benefits the active duty community because it helps prepare them and reduces their profile,” he said of chiropractic care. “Pilots can't take certain types of medications, so it's great to be able to offer them other options for pain management.
“The misconception about chiropractic care is that we're just manipulating and adjusting,” Lopez continued. “That's what we're known for. But that's not all. We prescribe exercises to correct muscle imbalances, prepare you, and reduce injury. In our clinic We also treat soft tissue with manual therapy. There are a variety of tools that we have.”
The Armed Forces Wellness Center provides preventative programs and services to help community members live healthier lives.
Dr. Randall Watkins, Director of the Armed Forces Wellness Center, helps ensure AFWC's capabilities are delivered to the communities it serves.
“Not every soldier has access to a vehicle,” Watkins said. “Public transport is sometimes at risk. So it's really about proximity and the ability for soldiers to benefit from the service.
“We see the footprints of the Hohenfels military, of Grefenwohr, of Vilseck, of Garmisch, of Ansbach, of Illesheim, of Bavaria as a whole,” Watkins continued. “We cover a wide range of aspects of wellness. Our primary focus in many communities is weight management.”
They make recommendations to patients on what they need to do to lose, maintain, and gain weight and increase lean muscle mass. They make recommendations based on the patient's current calorie consumption, metabolism, and physical activity. It can also assess blood oxygen levels and how the patient processes lactic acid.
Watkins added that AFWC not only serves military personnel, but also their families and civilian employees.
Not all parts of the Service are available from Vilseck. The BodyPod, a white egg-shaped module in which users sit and use air pressure to assess body composition, is not maneuverable enough to make it to Hohenfels and back every other week.
“At least they can take care of the consultation part and get at least basic diet and exercise advice from the Armed Forces Wellness Center,” McKenna said. “And the Armed Forces Wellness Center staff can refer them to more services.”
“We're always open to trying to make things more patient-centered,” Harris said. “There are a lot of services being offered. If they would like to see something else in rotation in those areas, which is an unmet need, please let us know.” ”
