LEMOORE, Calif. (Feb. 15, 2024) Hospitalman 2nd Class Ray Charles Quioko, a native of Cavite, Philippines, works in care at the Lemoore Naval Health Clinic Public Health Unit. He graduated from high school in his 2009 year and joined the Navy in 2013.
Quioco is the Chief Petty Officer and is responsible for all administrative requirements related to immunizations, occupational health, preventive medicine, and health and wellness.
“I enjoy leading and training a diverse group of sailors,” said Kioko. “I help with daily tasks such as administering vaccinations and food hygiene inspections.”
Ms. Quioco's work includes assisting with pre-employment occupational health medical examinations and health hazard medical examinations. He also assists with smoking cessation programs and nutritional counseling.
In the future, Kioko hopes to attend technical school in San Antonio to become a preventive medicine technician. He looks forward to continuing his education and contributing to the delivery of medical care aboard U.S. Navy ships.
Mr. Cuioco's proudest naval accomplishment was when he served aboard the USS Nitze (DDG 94), where the crew performed a medical evacuation in accordance with the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). did. The International Maritime Organization website includes a statement from the captain. The duty is to provide assistance at sea. This includes providing medical assistance if requested.
“The ship received a distress call from a foreign sailor who did not have medical capabilities,” Kioko recalled. “We immediately dispatched a helicopter and picked up one of our three members. She diagnosed and treated the patient while on the helicopter.”
Meanwhile, on the Nitze, Cuioco prepared the flight deck team, stretcher bearers, and a treatment room to receive the patient.
“Upon arrival, we immediately conducted a head-to-toe assessment and collected blood samples for a more accurate diagnosis,” said Kioko. “Upon completion, senior medical representatives on board determined that the patient was safe to move and was ready for transfer to a higher level medical facility.”
A few days later, the team received word from the patient's home country that the patient had arrived safely.
Quioco prides himself on his optimistic and resilient personality, which he learned while growing up in the Philippines.
