The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) today announced the start of Track 3 of the Remote Identity Verification Technology Demonstration (RIVTD). This demonstration demonstrates the ability of a remote identity verification system to distinguish between real users and attackers. Attempting to impersonate another user.
of RIVTD This is a technical challenge that tests the industry's ability to provide remote identity verification technology that is secure, accurate, and easy to use. This challenge is held in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Department of Homeland Security Forensic Science Laboratory, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Arun Vemury, senior engineering advisor for identity technology at S&T, said in a statement: “The emergence of powerful and widely accessible new technologies highlights the importance of accelerating the development and evaluation of tools to combat fraud.”
Through this challenge, DHS S&T hopes to combat identity fraud when users apply for government services, open bank accounts, and authenticate social media accounts.
Track 1 of RIVTD focused on authenticating identification documents such as U.S. state-issued driver's licenses and ID cards. Track 2 focused on fraud detection, evaluating the software's ability to match selfies with ID photos. Applications for both Tracks 1 and 2 are now closed.
DHS S&T said the results from each track will help inform new standards, testing protocols and requirements to U.S. government agencies and other partners.
“As remote identity verification technologies become more prevalent, detection of live/presentation attacks by bad actors and imposters will become a critical element of remote self-enrollment of individuals' digital identities,” said Jason Lim, TSA ID Capability Manager. says. “TSA is excited to continue partnering with his S&T in this area and to complete an independent evaluation in the future that will provide an objective baseline of performance across the vendor community.”
Track 3 applications are due by February 29, 2024 to rivtd@mdtf.org. Interested applicants can find more information about the challenge at the following link: DHS S&T website.
