Petting zoo with baby kangaroos, beekeeping demonstration for kids
Following the success of last year's Spring Garden Show, Destrehan Plantation will hold its second annual event starting Saturday, April 20th. Until Sunday, April 21st.

The Spring Garden and Pet Show is presented by the Plantation in partnership with the River Road Historical Society, LSU AgCenter, Louisiana Master Gardeners, and the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter, and is held in a plant nursery and on the porch. , patio, garden, garden, pet. Nonprofit shelters will also be at the show displaying adoptable dogs and cats.
Melissa Monica, media and public relations manager for Destrehan Plantation, said the idea to include a pet show came after some guests brought their pets last year, even though only service dogs were allowed. Ta.
“We let them in,” she said. “I am a dog lover and follow the St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter. I wanted to help them by providing a place for them at the show along with rescue dogs available for adoption.” .”
While 52 vendors have registered to sell their wares at the event, the Spring Garden and Pet Show will also feature educational presentations on gardening, insects, wildlife and pet care. Presentations will cover many topics, including learning how to coexist with wildlife, Q&A with master gardeners, birdwatching, and how to plant trees in the right places.
“This year's exhibit is from the Greater New Orleans Bonsai Association. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will have an exhibit on the Invasive Pest Program and Insect Display Cases,” Monica said. “Silent Voices Raccoon and Wildlife Rehabilitation features exhibits on wildlife education and rehabilitation.”
There will also be plenty of activities for children on Saturday, including a petting zoo with baby kangaroos, an arts and crafts activity tent and beekeeping demonstrations. The Country Store will include the 2024 Farmer's Yearbook, gardening gloves and tools, as well as nature-themed toys such as bird callers, aviaries and children's wheelbarrows.
“We will also be selling Peggy Martin rose bushes and groundcover rose bushes,” Monica added.
Three music bands will perform over the weekend, with harpist Megan Kwiatkowski performing from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, followed by Nora Duke's Jazz Quarter taking the stage from noon to 3 p.m. , Peyton Falgust will perform a solo acoustic performance from noon to 3:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
The food court offers spring drinks with and without alcohol.
Monica emphasized that the Spring Garden and Pet Show will be something for everyone.
“Adults can also enjoy shopping for plants, balconies, patios, gardens and gardening supplies,” she said. “Children can enjoy educational presentations throughout the day. Children can enjoy an activity tent with spring-themed arts and crafts.”
Admission to the show is $5, and children under 5 are free. Dogs are welcome at the event, but must be leashed. The festival will run from 10am to 4pm each day.
