Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ended his 2024 presidential campaign on Sunday, endorsing former President Donald Trump.
Like his disappointing campaign itself, perhaps one of the worst in history, DeSantis' video announcing the suspension included: obviously fake Winston Churchill's famous quote.
“Success is not final and failure is not fatal. What matters is the courage to continue,” DeSantis wrote in a tweet. his videoattributes this quote to Churchill.
But soon many people It pointed outthe International Churchill Society debunked this quote over a decade ago.
“Not only did Churchill never say such words, but the words commonly attributed to him were: 'Success is not final, failure is not fatal. What counts is the courage to continue.' “He has never said anything similar,” the association wrote. In 2013.
It added that this conclusion was based on “a careful study of the 50 million words of the canon about Churchill and Churchill, including all of Churchill's books, articles, speeches and papers.”
A spokesperson for DeSantis did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
The Florida governor was seen as Trump's strongest opponent early in the campaign, but DeSantis' approval ratings have plummeted in the months since.
He pinned his hopes on last week's Iowa caucuses, where he lost to Trump by a 30-point margin.
“We can't get supporters to donate their time and resources unless we have a clear path to victory,” DeSantis said in a statement Sunday. “It's clear that the vast majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance.”
