David Bowersox has been appointed vice president for finance and administration at Duke University, effective April 1.
Bowersox currently serves as associate dean for finance and administration in the School of Nursing, a position she assumed in 2020. He has been the school's senior finance leader for over 20 years and is responsible for all human resources, contracts, financial aid, technology, marketing, facilities and emergency planning.
Prior to joining Duke in 2003, Bowersox held financial leadership positions at several large healthcare organizations. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Towson University, earned his MBA from the University of Houston, and completed Wharton's Executive Development Program at the University of Pennsylvania.
As vice provost, Mr. Bowersox will oversee all human resources, financial and academic affairs activities within the provost's jurisdiction and will join the provost's senior leadership team.
“Dave's breadth of experience and skills, exceptional track record in the School of Nursing, and commitment to organizational excellence and innovation made him stand out among a crowded field of candidates,” said President Alec D. Gallimore. “He will be an invaluable asset to the university in his new role.”
Bowersox will succeed Amy Oates, who is retiring in January 2023 to serve as interim lieutenant governor for finance and administration. Mr. Oates previously served in senior finance and management positions within the Governor's jurisdiction for more than 20 years, retiring in 2020 as Deputy Governor for Budget and Finance.
“Amy has been an excellent leader and partner to me and many others at Duke in this role, and I am grateful for her contributions,” Gallimore said.
