Shortly after 2 p.m. Monday, gunshots rang out inside Springfield's Science and Technology High School, also known as Cytech.
“He said something like, ladies and gentlemen, we're going into lockdown, please don't let your students out of your classroom until we tell them to,” Hannah said. “It was the end of the day, so we didn't leave until 2:40 p.m. Around there.”
Hannah, a science and engineering student, was in the building Monday afternoon when everything came to light.
After Monday's altercation, many students took to social media and liked this video, which can be seen here. One of the videos appears to show the moment a gun is fired, blowing out a window at the school.
Fortunately, no one was shot or seriously injured, but students and parents described the situation as “horrifying.”
City Councilor Large Tracy Whitfield added, “Everyone was scared, everyone was up in arms, and we didn't know what was going on. We need to do more in the city of Springfield.”
Officials said it all started when a student let two adults into the school.
“It's despicable for students to admit adults to their schools,” Mayor Sarno said.
In the aftermath, the community was furious.
“Our children need to be safe,” said Francena Brown, a mother who is a science and engineering major.
“I'm upset, I'm hurt, I'm going through a lot of emotions,” added City Councilor LaVar Clickbluth. “We really need to come up with some solutions. This shouldn't happen to our precious young people in our schools.”

While some city leaders are calling for change…
“There may be more security indicators that could be put in place,” Councilman Whitfield noted. “As a community, we need to do more.”
Not just from a safety standpoint, but also the city's approach to gun violence.
“We need to continue to support and assist and try to keep these children safe,” Brown said. “Guns are not the answer. Start helping with jobs and activities for these kids and stop thinking it's okay to pick up a gun and take someone else's life.”
Two people were arrested, but the other two are reportedly still at large. Springfield Police are currently investigating everything that happened at Cytech on Tuesday afternoon.
