Cage the Elephant lead singer Matt Schulz has revealed that he was suffering from a “mental health crisis” before being arrested last year for possessing two loaded firearms.
“It's a miracle that I'm here today,” Schultz wrote in a statement posted on Instagram Wednesday night. “I was arrested last year, and it definitely saved my life. After the arrest, I spent two months in the hospital and then several months of outpatient treatment. I finally learned what happened. I can explain it.”
He continued, “For the past three years, I have unknowingly been living through a complete mental health crisis.'' An iatrogenic reaction to prescribed medication caused me to become psychotic within a short period of time. To get through this, I needed the love and support of my band brothers, my community, and most of all, my wife Eva, who has been by my side and has taken my life many times. It is no exaggeration to say that she is a warrior and a queen.”
The musician continued to thank his wife Eva Ross for his “steadfast love” and said, “Coupled with professional treatment, I was able to come to grips with reality and make a full recovery.” he continued. “Along the way, I learned many tough lessons and I thank God that I was able to come out the other side. I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to write this message. I owe my life to God, my friends, my family, and my support system at Cage the Elephant. I need to say 'thank you' and I'll say it again now.”
In January 2023, the singer was charged with firearms possession after police found Schultz's gun in a room at the Bowery Hotel in Lower Manhattan. In exchange for avoiding prison time, Schultz pled guilty to three charges: attempted criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal possession of a weapon.
“Matt has worked hard to solve this case. He appreciates the opportunity to prove himself,” said attorney Sanford Talking. rolling stone. “This will never happen again. He can move forward with his life and music.”
