Change is a constant in today's business and is part of the growth of businesses like Narragansett's Trio Restaurant, which is undergoing extensive renovations.
Reinvention, new strategies, and a new look are all part of the changes that flexible businesses embrace.
Remember back in 1989-1990 when print, magazine, and television advertising was an easy way to reach customers? At the time, the word website was not in business owners' vocabulary.
Just 10 years later, advertising and promotions on websites became popular and ceased to be an essential advertising tool.
A decade later, between 2010 and 2011, “app” became more than an appetizer, it became a new word and a business necessity.
Therefore, constant change, responding to demand, and rebranding are essential for businesses to stay ahead of changing popularity and interests.
One local business following this rule is Trio's owner, Newport Restaurant Group. The restaurant on Kingstown Road has begun renovations in preparation for its transformation into 'Celeste'.
In an interview, Jeff Tenner, NRG's director of concept development, explained what's going on and the reasoning behind the changes.
- What has your market research on South County and the changes taking place there in terms of new residents moving into upscale areas taught you about new design possibilities?
Tanner: We opened Trio 15 years ago and it has been embraced by locals and tourists alike. We were evolving some of our concepts and realized it was the right time to make a change. Celeste hopes to gain a similarly loyal following in Narragansett and the surrounding area.
- Renovations are currently underway at the Trio. Could you explain the design concept of “Celeste” from an appearance standpoint? It reminds you of the European coastline, right?
Tanner: Celeste's goal is to create a vibrant, eclectic atmosphere both inside and outside of the expanded patio area, making guests feel like they're dining on a sunny European shore.
Renovation work will begin in the fall of 2023, changing the exterior of the building from deep green to a clean white. The interior will also be brighter with colorful and beautiful accents, including a tiled bar façade, all-new lighting, and vibrant artwork.
- Will outdoor dining with an ocean view change anything?
Tanner: One of the great things about this location is its proximity to Narragansett Bay. The outdoor patio has been completely renovated and offers expanded seating and a new bar configuration. We're very excited about our outdoor space and believe our customers will love the change, too.
- How does the “Celeste” concept apply to menu offerings? Can you give some examples?
Tanner: The Celeste concept really evolved from menu inspiration from the coastal flavors of Italy, France, and Spain. In addition to our traditional New England raw bar menu, we will continue to offer shareable appetizers like patatas bravas (spicy fries) and shrimp sofrito.
We also offer fresh new flavors of pizza, such as potato with rosemary and preserved lemon. Main plates include Moroccan chicken and couscous, spaghetti and clams, and romesco cod. The wine list also includes great new and popular varietals from Italy, France and Spain.
- Will the price change significantly?
Tanner: Celeste's menu is very different from Trio's, but the price range is not that different. You're sure to find something for every taste and every price point.
- How long will you be closed and when will you reopen?
Tanner: Trio closed at the end of January, but Celeste is scheduled to open by the end of March.
