- Biden on Saturday promised retaliation after a drone strike killed three U.S. soldiers in Jordan.
- Biden called the attack “despicable.”
- The attack was the first line-of-fire fatality for a U.S. soldier since the start of the war in Gaza.
Three U.S. service members were killed and at least 25 others were injured in a drone strike in Jordan near the Syrian border on Saturday, President Joe Biden said.
These deaths were the first U.S. military fatalities related to the Gaza conflict that began last October.
According to the Associated Press, U.S. officials have blamed the attack on an “Iranian-backed” group, but have not yet specified which group they believe was responsible. Not yet. Like Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, Hamas is also believed to be revived by Iran. The Houthis have been launching drone attacks against ships in the Red Sea for months.
Biden said the United States was “still gathering the facts” about Saturday's “despicable and completely unwarranted” attack. He vowed revenge.
“There is no question, we will hold everyone responsible accountable at once and in the manner we choose,” the president said Sunday.
The names of the dead and injured soldiers have not yet been released by the military.
