Better Business Bureau advice to protect yourself from scams
It's Protection Week, the Better Business Bureau is educating people through its annual Scam Tracker Risk Report, and we're joined by BBB's JOSH PLANOS. Josh, thanks for joining us. First of all, thank you so much for having me. Rob. surely. What are some of the most common scams you see? Yes. Very unfortunately, we are seeing an increase in the amount of cryptocurrency scams being reported locally, regionally and nationally. So this is not just a ploy to get people to invest in a technology they have little experience with, but also a preferred payment method in many types of scams, especially romance scams. Scammers target this because these transactions cannot be reversed. So you can send someone crypto and never see that money again, perfect for scammers and scam-related purposes. Now, big red flag. Is there a particular age group that you target more often? I'm glad you asked. Well, this is the second year in a row that people between the ages of 18 and 24 have been reported. Highest median loss across all age groups. That's $155. Why this is important is because for a long time, fraud and fraud prevention efforts have targeted older adults. Oh, there's a reason for that. However, in the digital age, as the number of people connected online increases, it stands to reason that these people are more likely to fall for or encounter a scam. Oh, but perhaps most importantly, they're the least likely to report having been scammed. And it actually only protects the perpetrators of the crime. So. 18 to 24 is a demographic that we're focusing on, um, moving forward. Well, they're probably confused, I imagine. So what should you do if you believe you've been targeted? Yeah. Therefore, your best bet is to freeze your credit. Also, freeze the various accounts you have. You should make sure that you update your password. If you have a compromised account, you should also report it to the appropriate authorities. We like to think he's BBB. ORG SLASH SCAM TRACKER is the right place. Because if we determine that litigation is necessary or local law enforcement intervention is necessary, we can pass on that information. But the important thing is not to be quiet. right. How far are we talking today just to spread awareness? Josh, thank you so much. Thank you for doing as Josh said. This information can also be found here.
