JEFFERSON PARISH, La. — According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.3 million animals enter U.S. shelters each year, and about half of them are dogs.
On Tuesday, WWL Louisiana had the opportunity to meet Timmy, a 7-year-old JSPCA rescue worker who is referred to as a kind old man.
“He has so much energy,” said Rebecca Bourgeois of JP Parks and Rec. “Once he gets on the ground, he’s ready to go.”
Since January, Timmy has been living in a shelter inside the Jefferson Feed store.
“He was handed over to a shelter,” she said. “So someone dropped him off.”
Bourgeois said Timmy's story is similar to many pets in the greater New Orleans area. Pets in shelters like the New Orleans Humane Society had no place to call home and no one to love them forever.
“They should be given a good home. They deserve someone to come home to,” Bourgeois said.
The Jefferson Parish shelter is reaching capacity and families are desperately needed to adopt these animals.
That's why Parks and Recreation is planning to hold the first-ever “Best Rescue in Show” contest.
“We work with five local organizations and rescues who bring in contestants for categories such as Best Ear, Best Senior Dog and Best Special Needs Dog,” Bourgeois said. Told.
Winners in each category will receive a title ribbon. I hope someone in the audience falls in love with this rescue mission and takes them home.
“Breeders are the reason we have so many puppies,” she says. “All of our shelters are full at the moment, so it’s really important that we display these certified pre-owned animals and let them know that they’re just as good as any other animal.”
The dog show will be held on Saturday, April 13th at 10 a.m. at the Jefferson Playground Gym. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased online at JPRD.com.
