We just did our annual “Spring Forward” in early March, right? Now, United Way is “actively” participating in Monroe County's annual spring health screening event. One of United Way of Monroe/Linawee County's goals and priorities is to provide access to health care services for all. Michigan's Roadmap to Healthy Communities lists increasing access to health and social programs and services as a priority for addressing social determinants of health. Health programs such as Health Check can help improve and increase access to health services. Health Check allows you to perform health tests at a low cost, even if your insurance has high copays or deductibles. This is a great opportunity for adult residents of Monroe County to secure low-cost or free health testing. Over the years, health checks have helped save lives by discovering previously unknown diseases such as diabetes and leukemia. Funding for this project comes from United Way of Monroe/Linawee County and ProMedica Monroe Hospital, which will provide clinical tests and procedures.
Community partners including Family Medical Center of Michigan, the Monroe County Health Department, the RSVP program, and ProMedica Pharmacy and Laboratories are helping provide staffing and volunteers. The event will also include a drug take-back program to ensure proper disposal of unused or expired medications. Local law enforcement, representatives from the Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition, and local pharmacists are on-site to assist with this service. Agencies such as ProMedica Diabetes Self-Management, Heartland Hospice Program, Area Agencies on Aging, Monroe County Opportunity Program, and Superior Legal Services will also have information tables at the event.
The costs of this project are kept to a minimum by working in partnership. Please share this information with anyone you think needs affordable health screening. For those who cannot afford the $20 blood panel test fee, a limited number of free blood panel test coupons will be provided. For free coupons, contact United Way at 734-242-1331 or contact one of our partner agencies.
