This book was published in his 1968 and tells the story of a soldier during World War II who struggles to return home. Much of it is based on Momaday's childhood in New Mexico and the conflict between the ways of his ancestors and the outside world. He was born in Oklahoma and was a member of the Kiowa tribe.
