Valentine's Day is all about love (and 460 million flowers), but not without a layover in Miami.
MIAMI (AP) — Valentine's Day may not be known as a busy time for air travelers, but the past three weeks have been hectic for those in Miami's fresh and cut flower industry. In fact, approximately 90 percent of the flowers sold in U.S. florists and supermarkets arrive via Miami International Airport on hundreds of flights from South America. In fact, more than 18,000 tons of fresh cut flowers have passed through Miami's airport since mid-January. That's where U.S. Customs and Border Protection agricultural experts come into play. They inspect flower bunches to prevent potentially harmful plants, pests, and exotic animal diseases from entering the country.
