WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — Monday marks two weeks until the total solar eclipse.
I wanted to know where my pets and animals would be left for the four minutes of total darkness.
Cameron Park Zoo officials say they will investigate how the animals will react.
“Do our animals behave differently during a solar eclipse than on normal days? Do they think night is approaching in the middle of the day? Do they get caught off guard and startled?” “Is there any stress or anxiety associated with that?” asked Cameron Park Zoo Director Brendan Wylie.
Wiley says he's interested in seeing how elephants, turtles and birds react.
“Darkness during the day tends to affect birds the most, and it's this silence that is commonly reported, and you don't realize how much bird noise takes up your day until it's gone.” ,” Wiley said.
The zoo will open on April 8, and visitors will be able to observe animals and record their findings during the eclipse.
“We hope they will share it with us so we can put all their actions into a unified database for further reference,” Wiley said.
Beyond zoo animals, the Central Texas Humane Society wants pet owners to be proactive.
“We would like to remind all pet parents that during the eclipse they should be treated like fireworks and that no one runs out of the backyard in fear or panic and gets lost and wanders into the backyard. We encourage you to always make sure your pet is inside the home.'Community,'' said Brooke Farrell, director of community relations at the Humane Society.
The Comic-Con event will be held at Cameron Park Zoo on April 6th and 7th.
A locked zoo event will also be held on Saturday night, April 6th.
The Central Texas Humane Society will also be holding a shelter sleepover the same weekend.
