BOSTON – Having an “active” workstation may improve your brain health. These workstations incorporate walking pads, bicycles, steppers, and standing desks. In other words, a “desk” that involves something other than sitting.
The Mayo Clinic team placed 44 participants in four office environments over four days and analyzed neurocognitive functions such as reasoning, memory, concentration, and typing speed. They found that brain function either improved or remained unchanged while using an active workstation.
Reasoning scores also improved when standing, stepping, or walking compared to sitting, but typing speed was slower.
But perhaps health care providers should mention active workstations when counseling patients about how to prevent obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
