In the early morning hours of January 21, a small asteroid crashed through the sky and into Earth's atmosphere near Berlin, Germany. After entering the atmosphere, the asteroid exploded in the air, producing a harmless but bright fireball that could be seen for miles.
The asteroid, identified as 2024 BXI, was first discovered by astronomer Christian Sarnetsky, who calls himself an asteroid hunter, according to Live Science. Sarnetsky works at Piskestedt Mountain Station, part of Hungary's Konkoli Observatory. Using the observatory's 60-centimeter Schmidt telescope, he was able to identify the space rock. NASA Immediately after the discovery of the space rock, researchers published comprehensive predictions about the location and time of the meteorite's impact.
